Quick start guide to exercise bikes
September 17, 2008

An exercise bike is a stationary bicycle that comes either as a recumbent or as an upright. Very similar in appearance to a standard bike, the upright has a vertical orientation while on the recumbent there is a backrest and the riders leg are extended in front of them. The recumbent is rising in use and popularity because of their ease of use and the comfort they provide to the user, especially for anyone that suffers from back pain. There are differing opinions on the level of workout the recumbent offers in comparison to an upright that allows for a great variety of exercises, such as riding while standing for a higher intensity training session.
They vary greatly in price and accessories with the most basic being a no frills, user driven upright, to a fully loaded recumbent equipped with features like spinning capabilities, data entry, radio, video displays, preset workouts and even gaming capabilities.
Leading makers of exercise machinery generally offer both styles and the choice is up to the rider depending on budget, work out needs and desire. It is best to try various models and styles to decide which is best for your personal situation.
